Rupert Graf Strachwitz
Rupert Graf Strachwitz, born in 1947, is a political scientist, lecturer at several universities, chairman of the Maecenata Foundation’s board and former Director of the Maecenata Institute.
He studied political science, history and the history of art at the Colgate University (USA) and at the University of Munich. He completed his PHD at the University of Münster. After various jobs in Germany and abroad, he founded the Maecenata Management GmbH in Munich in 1989 as a specialist advisory and service provider for the non-profit sector and was head of the organisation until 2011. From 1997 till 2023, he has led the Maecenata Institute for Philanthropy and Civil Society. In 2011, he established the Maecenata Foundation in Munich. Since 1 April 2023, he has been the Director of the Tocqueville Forum. He is also a freelance academic journalist and consultant for foundations.
His voluntary and part-time roles have included, among others, the Vice-Presidency of Caritas Deutschland from 1984-1985, membership of Europa Nostra’s board in The Hague, membership of the German Bundestag’s enquiry commission into the ‘Future of civic engagement’ from 1999-2002, membership of the Fondazione Cariplo’s board in Milan 1999-2007 and Chairman of the FDP’s Federal Committee on Culture from 2009-2016. He is a member of the organisational body of a number of foundations, member of the German Cultural Council’s International Committee and the deputy Chairman of the British-German Society, Berlin, since 2012. Alongside his lecturing activities in Germany and abroad, he teaches at various German universities and has around 650 publications to his name.
