MAECENATA
MANAGEMENT is Germany’s oldest consultancy specialising in the
not-for-profit sector. It was founded in 1989 by Rupert Graf Strachwitz.
HISTORY
After
working in and with nonprofits as a volunteer, staff, and board member
for nearly 20 years, he knew that the sector in Germany, while growing
fast and attracting increasing support from individuals, corporates,
and public institutions, was facing the challenge to improve its
management and organisational development as well as its theoretical
background.
Over
the years, the initial concept has been amended and adapted, but the
mission has remained the same: to help philanthropists and
not-for-profit institutions improve their contribution to society by
providing professional assistance in their strategic decision making,
their initial stages, and their day to day business.
For
many years now, foundations have relied on Maecenata to pursue their
aims. We have been instrumental in setting up well over 200 new
foundations, and approx. 50, large and small, have chosen to be fully
managed by Maecenata. More recently, specific donor services and
corporate grant programmes have gained prominence among our activities.
AFFILIATIONS
A
special subsidiary, MAECENATA INTERNATIONAL (MINT), takes care of
transnational giving within the TRANSNATIONAL GIVING EUROPE network
(TGE). Other partners to this network include the Charities Aid
Foundation (UK), Fondation de France, Fondation Roi Baudouin (Belgium)
and Oranje Fonds (Netherlands).
Our research, public information
and public policy activities were reorganised in a separate non-profit
in 1997 to form what today has become the MAECENATA INSTITUTE FOR
PHILANTHROPY AND CIVIL SOCIETY AT HUMBOLDT UNIVERSITY Berlin (www.maecenata.de).
With
a New York based consultancy, GK Communications, we are affiliated as
TRANSATLANTIC ADVISORS to facilitate cross border philanthropic
activities.
